Create a simple gear with radial copies

Build a simple spur-gear style model from a base disc and one tooth. You will learn how to place a pivot, copy while rotating and distribute geometry evenly around a centre.

What you’ll learn

This example is ideal for learning rotate-and-copy. For loaded or precisely meshing drive gears you should later use a calculated involute tooth profile. The workflow is still very useful for prototypes, decorative parts, knobs and simple mechanisms.

Step by step

01

Create the base disc

Draw a circle about 40 mm in diameter and extrude it to roughly 6 mm with Push/Pull. This disc is the gear body.

02

Model one tooth

Create one small box-shaped tooth at the outer rim and let it overlap the base disc slightly. For a first example, about 6 mm width and 4 mm radial length works well. Match its height to the base disc.

03

Set the pivot to the centre

Select only the tooth and start Rotate. Place the pivot exactly at the centre of the base disc. Use the centre snap so every copy is truly concentric.

04

Create radial copies

Enable copy mode with Ctrl and use an angle that matches your desired tooth count. For 16 teeth that is 22.5°. Use the repeat/copy count until the full circle is filled.

05

Add the centre hole

Draw a smaller circle on the top face, for example 8 mm. Push/Pull it through the gear to cut the centre bore.

06

Export for 3D printing

Select the complete gear assembly and use Export → STL → Selection only. Check in your slicer that the overlapping bodies are combined into the intended printable part.
